Topic of the Month - Benign Prostatic hypertrophy (BPH)

By Les Wilson, M.D.

Benign Prostatic hypertrophy(BPH) is a fairly common condition in men over 50 years of age. BPH is an enlargement of the prostate gland, which surrounds part of the urethra. Common symptoms include:

  • increased frequency of urination
  • weak stream
  • nighttime urination(more than 2 times per night)
  • feeling that the bladder does not empty completely
  • dribbling or straining.

BPH can sometimes be associated with prostate cancer. All patients over 40 should have regular examinations and a blood test called a PSA.

Treatment options include medications and certain herbs. If the symptoms are severe enough surgical intervention may be necessary. Saw palmetto at 160 mg twice daily has been shown to be an effective herb to help with the symptoms of BPH. There are several medications that can be prescribed for prostate enlargement. Urologists are the specialists that deal with disorders of the prostate. It may be recommended that you see a urologist for further evaluation and treatment.
